Lip flip: Here is why men dislike botox lips.

 

Have you ever heard from lip flip? If you are not into non-surgical cosmetic procedure, you probably don’t know what it is about. Well, a lip flip is a nicer way to refer to botox lips. A lip flip procedure will relax the muscles around the upper lip, causing the lip to gently "flip" outward for a fuller, more defined appearance without adding volume. This has become extremely popular, especially among women who are feeding a market that is anticipated to attain a value of 11.6 billion USD by the year 2030. In this article, I outline a few reasons why many women choose to get a lip flip (and even become addicted to it), and I also present a broad perspective of men, most of whom have strong opinions about botox lips.

 

What is the difference between a lip flip and lip fillers?

Before diving into the topic of lip flip, I think it is very important to differentiate it from lip fillers. For those of you who aren't quite up to speed, here's a quick overview of the difference between the two.

A lip flip uses Botox to relax the muscles around the upper lip. It doesn't add any volume whatsoever. Instead, it allows the existing lip tissue to relax and gently "flip" outward for a subtle, natural-looking enhancement. The results are quite modest, last about 2 to 5 months, and typically cost between 190 and 485 USD/EUR (it’s usually more expensive in Switzerland). Because it affects muscle movement, the person might notice a little difficulty using a straw or pronouncing certain letters, but there's virtually no downtime. The people who go for that option usually have thin lips, a gummy smile, or want a low-commitment, affordable enhancement without adding actual volume.

Lip fillers, on the other hand, are made of hyaluronic acid gel. They are injected directly into the lip tissue to add noticeable volume, shape, and hydration. The results can range from natural to dramatic, depending on how much you get, and they last significantly longer, typically 6 to 12 months. However, they are also more expensive, averaging around 700 USD/EUR per syringe (significantly more expensive in Switzerland), and one should expect some swelling and bruising for a few days afterward. Unlike a lip flip, fillers don't affect muscle movement, so the lips will feel fuller but still move naturally. Plus, if the patient doesn’t like the result, fillers can be dissolved immediately with an enzyme.

Now that you understand the difference between these two procedures, here’s a detail that will surely surprise you: Many people get both procedures together or in sequence! This is sometimes called a "combo lip" or "lip lift combo." The filler adds the volume, while the lip flip fine-tunes the shape and prevents the filler from causing a "duck lip" appearance. Typically, patients get the filler first, then the lip flip a few weeks later if they want additional upward curl.

 

Who gets a lip flip?

In most countries, botox lips is a procedure that is performed by licensed medical professionals such as plastic surgeons, dermatologists, or trained nurse injectors. This trend led by celebrities has made women to be by far the primary users of this type of procedure and some of them become even "addicted" to lip flip. While injectables are not chemically addictive, they can become psychologically addictive. Botox lips: Men don’t like that

Despite the popularity of lip flip and botox lips among women, every man I've spoken to about this has told me the same thing: “I prefer natural lips”. “ I don’t know why women are doing that”, “I don’t like duck lips”. Although lip flips and lip fillers are marketed as subtle enhancements, confidence boosters, and quick fixes for thin lips or gummy smiles, there is an evident disconnect happening behind the screens. While women are paying hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars for that perfect pout, many men are scratching their heads as they're not usually impressed by these procedures.

First, for many of them, a lip flip looks like an injury, not an enhancement. When they see swollen lips, their brain doesn't think "beauty." It thinks "allergic reaction" or "bee sting."

Because men aren't typically immersed in the world of cosmetic procedures, their first instinct is medical, not aesthetic. Common reactions from men will be: "It looks like she got punched in the mouth." ; "Did she have an allergic reaction?" ; "That looks painful."  What you see as plump and youthful, many men see as swollen and concerning. It's a fundamental mismatch in perception.

Then, most men think that a lip flip destroys natural flirting signals.  Indeed, the human face is designed for subtle, micro-movements, especially around the mouth. These tiny movements help us communicate interest, attraction, and emotion without saying a word. Lip flips and fillers interfere with that natural system because the pursed lip disappears and the natural smile changes (a frozen or bulky upper lip creates a smile that feels "forced" or "stiff.").

Men love a genuine, full-range smile that reaches the eyes and moves the mouth naturally. For many, a natural gummy smile is far more attractive than a "perfect" lip that won't budge.

Not to mention that men love the natural feel. And when the feel is wrong, they notice it pretty quickly. This is something botox clinics rarely mention. A Lip flip or a lip filler doesn't feel like natural lip tissue. It can feel firm, lumpy, or rubbery. Men who have kissed someone with fillers often describe: "It felt like kissing a scar." ; "I could feel hard little beads." ; "There was no give, just tight, bouncy resistance." Ladies, remember that natural lips are soft, pliable, and warm. Filled lips, particularly when overdone, lose that organic texture. And yes, men absolutely notice during intimate moments, and it can be a huge turn off.

I have even encountered some guys who thought in terms of value and necessity. When they see a lip flip or botox lips procedure that costs hundreds of dollars/EUR every few months (with no permanent result) they do the math. Common male reactions include: "That's money that could go toward a vacation, savings, or literally anything else." ;  "I don't want to be the one paying for her to look like she got stung." Whether fair or not, some men interpret this as vanity, financial irresponsibility, or a misalignment of priorities.

For most of them, a lip flip of botox lips makes women look older, not younger. Here's an irony that cosmetic injectables rarely advertise: overfilled lips can age you. The look most men associate with lip fillers isn't young, fresh, and dewy. It's the "Real Housewives" look, smooth, tight, overdone, and unmistakably middle-aged. And that’s what men will actually think about you without saying out loud: "That looks like a 45-year-old trying to look 25." ; "It screams 'trying too hard.'" Because the trend has been heavily adopted by reality TV stars and older influencers, the visual shorthand for lip filler, botox lips and lip flip has become "aging woman chasing youth", not "young, fresh beauty."

The “Duck Face” effect. This one is harsh, but I read it constantly in anonymous male forums! When lips are overfilled, they can take on a permanently pursed appearance, even at rest. Men compare this to the "duck face" pose (what was once a silly selfie expression becomes a permanent resting face) or synthetic sex dolls (overfilled lips lose natural creases, textures, and irregularities, becoming unnaturally uniform and smooth). Men use words like "fake," "plastic," and "cartoonish." These aren't compliments...

And the most brutal feedback of all: men consistently say they prefer the natural, pre-procedure lip. In anonymous surveys and forum threads, I’ve noticed that the sentiment is nearly universal: "I have never, in my entire life, heard a man say, 'Wow, look at those lips, she should get those injected.' We notice when it's fake, and we almost always prefer the before picture."

Ladies, men don't notice subtle, well-done work. They only notice the overdone extremes. But when they do notice? The reaction is rarely positive. Also keep in mind that, most men cannot distinguish between a lip flip (botox that relaxes the muscle) and lip fillers (volume-adding gel). If a woman has a lip flip, men might say: "Why can't she move her mouth right?" If she has filler, men might say: "Why are her lips swollen?" They don't know the procedure names. They just know something looks… off.

 

Lip flip and lip fillers: What women must understand.

Does that mean women shouldn't get a lip flip or fillers? Absolutely not. The lip flip is particularly popular among beauticians, influencers, escorts, and many women love their results and aren't doing it for male approval. But if you're wondering what the male gaze actually thinks? Now you know.

If your goal is specifically to attract a male partner, you should know that the vast majority of men do not find lip flip or fillers attractive and prefer natural beauties by far. They see swollen, stiff, or unnatural lips as a turn-off, not an enhancement. Beyond the aesthetics, many men interpret the choice to get these procedures as a signal of low self-confidence, misplaced priorities, or a willingness to spend significant money on temporary, superficial fixes rather than on genuine well-being or shared experiences. Ladies, the cosmetics industry profits from your insecurities and will never advertise the functional problems, the unnatural feel, or the fact that most men prefer the "before" photo. Before you book that appointment, ask yourself: Am I doing this for other women, for Instagram, or for the man who will actually want to kiss me?
