Crossdressing : What does it refer to?

 

Crossdressing. While this word might be familiar to some sex workers, I'm sure others don't know what it means. Is that a problem? No. However, as a professional escort, it's a term you should know. In fact, every escort with enough experience in this industry has received at least once such a request from a client. In this article, I offer a brief but concise explanation of what crossdressing is in the sex industry.

 

Crossdressing: A broader definition

Crossdressing refers to the act of wearing clothing and adopting styles or presentation typically associated with a different gender.

Most commonly, it describes people who wear clothes traditionally worn by the opposite sex. It is important to stress that crossdressing is about how someone presents themselves, not necessarily who they are. Meaning that, a person who crossdresses does not automatically identify as transgender, non-binary, or gay. In fact, many crossdressers are cisgender and heterosexual.

Crossdressing usually refers to a temporary practice, rather than a full-time gender transition. It can be occasional or habitual, public or private.

 

Crossdressing: Its meaning in the sex industry

Within the sex industry, crossdressing has become a well-defined niche. Yet, as with many aspects of sex work, it’s frequently misunderstood. Let’s clarify what it really means in this context.

In practical terms, crossdressing within sex work usually includes feminine presentation (wearing women's clothing, underwear, high heels, makeup...) by men (whether they are clients of an escort, or sex workers themselves), masculine presentation by female workers, or androgynous blends of both. These presentations often serve to blur traditional gender lines, offering clients a space to explore fantasies and aesthetics they may not experience elsewhere. For the worker, it can be a strategic niche: crossdressing is sought after, and escorts who master this style and understand the needs of these clients, often cultivate a unique and loyal audience.

 

Crossdressing: A deviance?

To consider crossdressing a deviance would be to admit that it's anything but normal. I wouldn't go that far.

It is not because some heterosexual people use crossdressing to explore or express a fluid or non-binary gender identity, that they are necessarily gay or bisexual. The act itself doesn’t imply any particular sexual preference.

I see crossdressing more as a part of a sexual fetish or fantasy. For some clients, crossdressing taps into specific fantasies involving gender-play, role play, or an attraction to contrasts—like a masculine body dressed in traditionally feminine ways. In these cases, the crossdressing itself may serve as the erotic trigger, making it part of what would be classified as a fetish or kink category.

 

Why do certain men call an escort for crossdressing?

An escort will primarily receive requests from men who want to be able to dress in a feminine way in front of her or wear heels during their time together. Escorts who feel comfortable with this fantasy offer them something extremely valuable: a space free from traditional gender expectations and judgement. Clients who may feel constrained by social norms can safely explore their curiosity, vulnerability and desire in the company of an open-minded sex worker.

Like many facets of the adult industry, crossdressing thrives in the space between reality and imagination—and deserves to be understood with nuance rather than stereotype.
