Work-life balance is also necessary in sex work, and when you achieve it, you're not just "less tired," but you actually become the sharp, calm, and capable person you know you're capable of being. Work gets easier, your clients are happier, you feel better about yourself, and you go home with energy to spare. In this article, I'll share five easy-to-follow tips to help you maintain your personal well-being at a high level.
1. Manage your emotional stress and boundaries by choosing your services
One way to preserve your well-being and mental health as an escort is to only offer services you feel comfortable with. For financial reasons, many list services they don't actually offer (just to catch clients, and often the client's disappointment means the encounter doesn't always go well and causes stress for both parties) or services they don't particularly enjoy performing (a client can almost always tell when an escort is performing a service she doesn't like because it's generally not well done : too mechanical, lacking authenticity, gentleness, or interest). Offering a service you don't enjoy will cause you a lot of stress and discomfort and won't be a positive experience for the client (who won't come back). It's better to offer a limited but excellent service, a service you feel comfortable with and enjoy providing. The same thinking applies with the number of clients you decide to see in a day and how late you will work. Remember that often, “Less is more”. Go for quality over quantity.
2. Be selective about the clients you choose to meet
A prostitute doesn't choose her clients. An escort does. As an escort, I don't advise you to accept just any client who wants to see you. Learn to quickly spot timewasters. The way they write to you should help you filter what type of client you're dealing with. Strange, incoherent, arrogant, rude, insulting messages, or messages written in the middle of the night are real red flags that you shouldn't ignore. Never accept a client who gives you a bad feeling. Similarly, you should stay away from calls from blocked numbers to protect your safety. Finally, learn to maintain a healthy distance with your clients (even the most regular ones) so that this relationship, although emotional and physical, remains primarily professional and does not encroach on your private life.
3. Give yourself periods of rest
Working as an escort is exhausting, both physically and mentally. That's why your body and mind absolutely need regular rest to continue functioning properly. Don’t burn the candle from both ends just because “work is so good presently” that you don’t want to let this money go. When your service and personality are liked by clients, they will always come back to you and wait for your return, even after a long period of absence. The timing and frequency of these breaks are up to you. If you're a full-time escort, taking at least 10 days off per month seems essential to me. A rested escort will always be able to provide a better service (more genuine and personalized) and a girl who constantly looks tired.
4. Reach out to a support network
There are many supports network that exist online and/or in the country you offer your services as an escort. Because of the heavy stigma around that profession, many escorts feel lonely and/or excluded as they often choosing not to disclose their activity to their friends and family. Joining a community of sex workers can help cope with the loneliness attached to the profession. Many countries where sex work is legal have some sort of support you can rely on (do your research!). In Zurich for instance, the association FIZ does launch several events annually, organized for sex workers.
5. Have another occupation
Being part-time escort instead of working full-time can benefit in maintaining a social network outside of this industry while helping you keeping your options open for the future (the day you will maybe decide to leave this industry permanently). Actually, not many women who engage in sex work (whether they are camgirls, erotic masseuses or independent escorts) are comfortable with this choice (a decision often going against the moral convictions that have been passed down to them throughout their lives) but end up making this choice anyway. For many of them, having another job on the side (in their eyes, a job that is morally more acceptable) does contribute to their personal well-being and mental health as it sustains their sense of purpose, competences and connection with the conventional world, while protecting their body and mind from chronic stress.
Balancing sex work and personal well-being: A must!
Being an independent escort is not for everyone. A few people are really good at it, love it and will be able to make a great living out of it. Many others aren’t really in it for the right reasons. Sex work may be quick money, but it is certainly not easy money as many like to claim. Not to mention that you can’t last in this industry if you disregard your personal well-being just for the sake of money.
